Yes, it’s another song sung in Portuguese, although this time the performer is from Portugal rather than Brazil.
Ana Moura is one of Portugal’s best-known modern fado singers, but “Desfado” doesn’t sound much like the mournful music people usually associate with traditional fado. Its buoyant rhythm and wonderfully catchy melody suggest happiness, while the lyrics are filled with sadness, uncertainty and contradiction.
Even the title is a bit of wordplay. “Desfado” suggests an undoing or reversal of fado—and the song repeatedly turns familiar ideas about fate, happiness and sorrow upside down. It sounds carefree while quietly questioning whether happiness can exist without sadness.
I began exploring fado because we’re planning a trip to Portugal. Of everything I’ve discovered so far, this is my favorite. Ana Moura’s warm, expressive singing drew me in immediately, and the song became even more interesting once I read the translated lyrics.
