Song 331: Welcome To The Human Race

“So you feel like the gods are out to get you
You feel like you’ve fallen from grace
And you’d run again if they’d only let you
Welcome to the human race”

Timbuk3—remember them? Most people know “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades,” a song whose irony was frequently mistaken for optimism. But Pat and Barbara MacDonald made plenty of sharp, thoughtful music beyond that one hit.

“Welcome to the Human Race” appeared on their second album, Eden Alley, in 1988. It is a simple song, but not a simplistic one. It speaks to anyone who has felt singled out by bad luck, failure or forces beyond their control.

Its consolation is not that everything will suddenly improve. The message is that disappointment, uncertainty and occasional defeat are part of being human. You are not uniquely cursed, and you are not alone. Accept the bruises, learn what you can and keep moving.

The understated arrangement and dry delivery prevent the song from turning into greeting-card inspiration. It is encouraging without becoming sentimental.

Had a bad day and need a pick-me-up? Put this song on. It is not about joy. It is about finding enough perspective to take the next step.
