Song 416: New York Wakes

Horslips was a pretty popular band but I always thought they’d be bigger. They often suffered to comparisons to Jethro Tull, mostly because of the use of flute in many of the songs. I like both bands, but they are really very different.

Their album “Aliens” was a great theme album about the migration of the Irish from Ireland to America. It definitely it an underrated gem of the 1970s.

I live in the Bay Area of California at the time, and Horslips came very rarely to tour out there. I regret never seeing them. It was a long haul from Ireland for them.

I recommend giving the entire album a listen, but New York Wakes is a fine introduction to the band.
