Song 411: Small Blue Thing

Suzanne Vega made beautiful songs in the 1980s, none any more beautiful than Small Blue Thing. It’s not so much that it is catchy, but it is haunting – not turning in my hand… but turning in my hand.

Maybe it is haunting because once again, this is an artist that I learned about from my friend Bob Schelen. This project has made me realize how many artists I enjoy I discovered through my friendship with Bob.

It’s a song that deserves reintroduction as much as any other with a remake by a different kind of musical performer. It could be a power guitar ballad for sure for the right band. It’s a very flexible piece of music. But treated as an homage to the songwriting, not as a hitmaker.

I don’t see many versions of this song on Second Hand Songs.
