Phil Manzanera’s 1975 solo debut, Diamond Head, is one of the most underrated album gems of the 1970s. One of its highlights is “Miss Shapiro,” co-written with his former Roxy Music bandmate Brian Eno, who also sings it.
A large part of the appeal is the way the song builds. It begins with discordant instrumental lines that sound as though they are pulling against one another, then sews them together into a series of fascinating riffs. Other songs on the album use similar ideas, but this one is primo.
Manzanera and Eno later performed it with 801, whose album 801 Live is also well worth hearing. If you enjoy adventurous guitar-driven art rock, give both albums a shot.
